Singer Omah Lay expressed concerns about the threat to the afrobeats genre. He lamented that the genre is becoming diluted in order to appeal to foreign audiences and is becoming overly commercialized.
During an interview on the Zach Sang Show, Omah Lay voiced his opinion that the afrobeats genre is no longer being preserved in its original form. He mentioned that the commercial success of the genre is leading many artists to prioritize financial gain over artistic passion.
“There is an excessive amount of money in the Afrobeats industry. Afrobeats artists are solely focused on chasing money,” he stated.
“I think people are corrupting the essence of Afrobeats. It has become overly commercialized. Currently, I do not think that Afrobeats is being handled responsibly.”
Recently, the afrobeats genre has faced backlash, with prominent Jamaican reggae artist Buju Banton criticizing it as “f*ckery.”
In a controversial interview, he argued that afrobeats lacks substance and will eventually lose its appeal.
