Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, also known as Tems, has characterized her time in a Ugandan prison as a fortunate turn of events.
The “Crazy Things” singer stated that she felt grateful to have endured prison, as it provided her with a unique perspective on the experiences of inmates.
Tems expressed that she would not have been able to understand the plight of prisoners without experiencing it firsthand.
She stressed that her time in prison had a humbling effect on her. Tems told ES Magazine, “Prison was a unique experience that I consider to be an honor. It allowed me to connect with people I would not have otherwise thought about, and being in their presence was truly humbling.”
It is noted that Tems and Omah Lay were arrested, charged, and subsequently detained in prison in Uganda for their participation in a concert at Speke Resort, Kampala, on December 12, 2020, in violation of COVID-19 social distancing regulations. After spending two nights in jail, they were eventually released on bail.
