Lagos State Police have arrested popular TikTok influencer Habeeb Hamzat, aka Peller, after a viral livestream showed him driving dangerously and crashing his car in what the police described as an attempted suicide and public endangerment.

The incident, which took place on the Lekki-Epe Expressway, was shared widely online and prompted immediate outrage, with many calling for police action. The Lagos police described Peller’s conduct as “a deliberate attempt to commit suicide” and have detained him for further investigation.

According to a statement by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a full probe. Once investigations conclude, Peller will be charged to a court of competent jurisdiction under applicable road safety and criminal laws.
Police noted that Peller’s livestreamed driving was not only dangerous to him but to other motorists and pedestrians. The crash that followed underscored the risk such stunts pose and triggered widespread debate on content creators prioritising online engagement over safety.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh warned social media influencers and general members of the public against engaging in reckless, dangerous or unlawful acts online. He stressed that the police command will enforce traffic laws strictly, adding that public roads are not platforms for stunts.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has also ordered prosecution processes to begin against Peller for multiple traffic violations, including distracted driving and use of a mobile phone while driving. The agency emphasised that fame does not exempt anyone from road laws.
Online reactions have been mixed. Many users condemned Peller’s conduct and called for strict legal consequences. Others questioned mental health dimensions of the incident and urged support for those struggling emotionally.
