Adekunle Gold Reveals Ongoing Battle with Sickle Cell Disease

Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has opened up about his lifelong fight with sickle cell disease, sharing how the condition has shaped his career, inspired his advocacy work, and now drives his health initiatives.

Adekunle Gold, the Nigerian singer and songwriter, has disclosed that he continues to manage his battle with sickle cell disease. He said the condition has been part of his life since birth and that he still experiences crises despite his success.

The revelation came during a recent interview in October 2025, where he spoke about the physical pain, the mental toll, and his motivation to advocate for better care for those living with the disease. He said he started treatment at age five and remains vigilant today.

His Early Diagnosis and Growing Up with Sickle Cell

Adekunle Gold revealed that his battle with sickle cell began at birth. During his childhood, hospitals visits, joint pains and physical restrictions were constant. He once shared he “felt life or death” as a child because of the disease.

His health challenges inspired his hit song “5 Star” and led to the launch of the “5 Star Care” initiative through his foundation. The programme offers free health insurance to 1,000 people living with sickle cell in Nigeria.
