Tiwa Savage has opened up about her first reaction to the Mavin collective hit “Dorobucci,” admitting she once thought it was a “crap song” when she first heard an unfinished version. The revelation came during an interview published by The Nation and other outlets.
She says the event took place in Dubai during her wedding, where producer Don Jazzy played the track several times in their hotel. Tiwa didn’t know it was her label’s project. She admits she watched others record and hesitated, believing the song might not be well-received.

After returning to Nigeria, Tiwa heard the completed version in the studio and was amazed by the transformation. She says she was so surprised and even angry that the final track sounded so different from what she first heard.
Tiwa revealed she was the last among the Mavin artists to record her verse for “Dorobucci,” largely because she was uncertain about its potential. Others in the label had already recorded, but she held back.
Despite her doubts, “Dorobucci” became a monumental hit across Nigeria and Africa. It’s now seen as a defining track for Mavin Records and one of the anthems of its era, cementing Tiwa’s place in Afrobeats history.
Tiwa gave credit to Don Jazzy’s vision and belief in the song. She acknowledges she didn’t foresee its impact but respects how production, collaboration, and timing aligned to make it a hit.
